general information
MAREC has a 1.8 kW Sky Stream wind turbine that was installed in 2007 for demonstration purposes. This wind turbine, which is designed for home and small business use, is mounted to a 45 foot (13.72 meter) pole to catch the wind above the roof of MAREC. It features a rotor diameter of 12 feet (3.72 meters), and has a cut-in wind speed, the wind speed at which the turbine begins to turn, rating of 8 mph (3.5 m/s).

Technical INFORMATION
The blades of the wind turbine pivot to catch the best wind when it is windy out.  When wind rotates the blades of the wind turbine, a low speed shaft turns.  The low speed shaft rotates a high speed shaft inside the generator through the use of a high ratio gear box.  A magnetic rotor located on the high speed shaft inside the generator spins inside loops of copper wire that are wound around an iron core.  As the rotor spins inside of the core, electromagnetic induction takes place through the coils and electrical current is generated.  This is clean energy because there are no hazardous chemical emissions.
