Microturbines create reliable electricity and heat. They have low
emissions and achieve up to 80% efficiency, where a traditional power plant achieves
approximately 35% efficiency. Natural gas is the fuel for this turbine,
which turns a generator to produce electricity. The hot exhaust air resulting
from this process is used to heat a working fluid, which is circulated through a
system of pipes under MAREC's loading dock driveway. This effectively
heats the driveway to melt snow in the winter.
